Sources: Major update on West Ham agreeing James Ward-Prowse deal after new twist

Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse remains a top midfield target for West Ham despite reports suggesting they have walked away from a deal, sources have told Football Insider.

David Moyes is a big fan of the 28-year-old – who was relegated to the Championship with the Saints in the 2022-23 campaign.

It is believed a return to the Premier League is enticing for England international Ward-Prowse ahead of the European Championships in Germany next year (2024).

The 11-cap star is keen to rectify his situation soon with Southampton’s season set to start with an away trip at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday (4 August).

Sky Sports claimed on Wednesday (2 August) that West Ham have ended their interest in Ward-Prowse amid concerns over the south coast club’s valuation of their captain.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Irons remain confident of sealing a deal for the midfielder in the final month of the window.

Ward-Prowse‘s contract at St Mary’s Stadium is set to run until June 2026.

The England international played every Premier League game in the 2022-23 campaign and has racked up 343 total top-flight appearances since making his debut in 2012.

He has notched 55 goals and 53 assists in 409 total appearances since coming through the famous Southampton academy.

West Ham are yet to make a summer signing with just days until the new season gets underway and have lost captain Declan Rice to Arsenal in a British-record deal.

The Irons start their campaign against Bournemouth on 12 August.
