Kieran Maguire: Sunderland set for 'major boost' amid talks update
Sunderland and their EFL allies would all receive a ‘major boost’ if a new £200million broadcast deal is struck.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the benefits clubs would feel from an improved television deal.
The EFL are currently holding the sales process for their broadcasting rights, with the Daily Mail reporting in February that Viaplay and DAZN are potentially joining Sky Sports and BT Sport in the battle to secure live matches.
The report adds that the television rights for the EFL could increase in value from £119m per season to as much as £200m per season.
The EFL are considering a hybrid deal including multiple broadcasters in an attempt to maximise revenue.
Maguire believes a deal worth £200m per season would help Championship clubs cover the wages of four players each season.
“If the EFL manage to increase the value of the deal from £119m to £200m and the money is split in the same distribution model, then it works out as just over £3m per club in the Championship,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“This would be a major boost for all in the Championship.
“However, Sunderland lost £149m in the decade ending in 2021, which included many years in the Premier League.
“They would not benefit hugely from an extra £3m per year.
“It shows the huge costs for ambitious clubs trying to retain their Premier League status and then trying to regain it when relegated.
“However, looking at the average salaries of players in the Championship, the extra £3m would help cover around four players, so it has to be good news.“
