Sources: Hume undergoing Portsmouth medical after Sunderland deal agreed

Sunderland defender Denver Hume is heading to Portsmouth for a medical after the two clubs agreed a permanent deal, Football Insider understands.

The 23-year-old was omitted from the Black Cats squad that beat Portsmouth 1-0 on Saturday to pave the way for his exit.

A recruitment source has now told Football Insider that Portsmouth and Sunderland have agreed terms and Hume has been granted permission to travel to the south Coast for a medical ahead of a permanent move.

It is expected the transfer will be completed in the next days.

As quoted by the Northern Echo in the aftermath of the Pompey win, Sunderland boss Lee Johnson confirmed Hume is nearing a move.

The defender has 18 months remaining on his contract at the Stadium of Light.

The performances of Lynden Gooch and Dennis Cirkik coupled with Hume’s injury troubles have meant he has struggled for game time this term.

The Northumberland-born defender made good strides after undergoing surgery for a hamstring issue in early 2021-22.

But a further ankle injury has hampered his progress and limited his minutes for the promotion-chasing Black Cats.

He has made eight appearances across all competitions this season but none of those have come as a starter in the league.

A Sunderland academy graduate, Hume signed his first professional terms in 2018.

He has turned out 123 times in total for the Wearside club, scoring four goals and laying on 12 assists.

He is set to become Pompey’s third signing of the window after Tyler Walker and Hayden Carter joined on loan from Coventry City and Blackburn Rovers respectively.
