Sources: Sunderland make move to sign Tottenham forward Clarke and beat multiple clubs to deal

Sunderland have made an approach to sign Tottenham winger Jack Clarke, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The winger, 21, has struggled to make an impression at Spurs since joining from boyhood club Leeds United in the summer of 2019 for £13million.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Sunderland are hoping to bring in Clarke ahead of the 31 January cut-off after making an enquiry about a deal.

The League One giants face competition from a number of other clubs who have contacted Spurs about signing the forward this month.

It is believed the Premier League big guns are willing to let him go to secure regular game time.

Clarke has spent the season so far at his parent club after changing his mind late last August about a loan move.

He had held talks with multiple clubs after being given the green light to go out on loan by Spurs.

But he changed his mind over leaving and has spent most of the campaign playing for the club’s Under-23s.

Clarke’s only senior involvement this season has come as a late substitute in the 1-0 Europa Conference League qualifier loss to Pacos Ferreira in August.

A £13million signing from Leeds United in July 2019, Clarke has had three loan spells during his two-and-a-half years at Spurs.

An unsuccessful temporary return to Elland Road was followed by moves to QPR and Stoke City, where he spent the second half of last season.

The six-times England Under-20 international featured 14 times for the Potters and provided two assists.

He has 18 months remaining on the four-year deal he signed upon his arrival at Tottenham.
