Sources: Tottenham set sights on signing Johnstone after transfer mission as £11m West Ham bid revealed

Tottenham have set their sights on signing West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Londoners were linked with the England international, 28, during the summer but he ended up staying at the Hawthorns.

A recruitment source has told Football insider that a senior Spurs scout watched Johnstone in action for West Brom against Preston North End last week.

Table-topping Albion drew that match 1-1 although Johnstone had a bittersweet evening when he made a series of mistakes in the subsequent 2-1 win over QPR.

West Brom wanted more than £15million for Johnstone during the summer, but West Ham only offered £11m before moving for Alphonse Areola.

Spurs are compiling a dossier on the goalkeeper with a view to a potential transfer.

They are assessing targets with the capability of replacing longstanding number one Hugo Lloris.

The Frenchman, 34, is out of contract next summer and his future at the club is in major doubt.

Football Insider broke the news on 17 May that Lloris would remain at Tottenham for this season before making a decision on whether to call time on his decade at the club.

Johnstone is also out of contract at the end of the season, when he could be prised from West Brom on a free transfer.

Tottenham signed keeper Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta during the summer on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

He replaced Joe Hart, who quit for Celtic, as the new Spurs number two.

Johnstone was named West Brom’s Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year for last season’s 2020-21 campaign.

His exploits were enough to earn him his first England cap in a 1-0 pre-Euros friendly win over Romania.
