Sources: Reading agree deal to sign West Brom star David Button

Reading are poised to sign West Brom goalkeeper David Button on a free transfer now their embargo has been lifted once again, sources have told Football Insider.

Button, 34, is not in Carlos Corberan’s plans at The Hawthorns this season and will be allowed to move on for free.

The goalkeeper joined the Baggies from Brighton three years ago, and signed a fresh two-year contract in May.

Button was not involved as West Brom lost 2-1 against Blackburn on the opening day of the Championship season (5 August).

Alex Palmer was given the nod between the sticks, with Josh Griffiths set to battle him for the number one jersey.

Meanwhile, two other young goalkeepers, Brad Foster and Ted Cann, extended their deals at The Hawthorns this summer.

Button played 16 matches for West Brom last season, with 13 of those outings coming in the Championship.

Since graduating from the Tottenham academy in 2008, Button has played for a whole host of teams across the English divisions.

The veteran has turned out for Brentford, Fulham, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, Brighton – and many other sides.

Button also made regular appearances for England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 level – but has managed just five career appearances in the Premier League.

The shot-stopper’s longest spell at one club came at Brentford between 2013 and 2016, where he made 134 appearances.

Reading lost their opening game of the League One season 1-0 against Peterborough on Saturday.

The Royals have completed deals for Harlee Dean, Sam Smith, Lewis Wing, Harvey Knibbs, Charlie Savage and Tivonge Rushesha.
