Kieran Maguire reveals West Brom takeover 'fear' as talks advance

There is a ‘big fear’ for West Brom fans that they could end up with another bad owner if a takeover is completed.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that it could be ‘out of the frying pan and into the fire’ for Baggies fans.

The Athletic reported on Thursday (15 June) that West Brom are in advanced talks over minority investment in the club.

The report adds that the minority investment could eventually lead to a full takeover, removing Guochuan Lai as the owner of the club.

Egyptian businessman Mohamed Elkashashy and Manchester-based sports lawyer Chris Farnell are involved in the group that have opened talks over investment in the Midlands club after previously being linked with bids for Charlton and Burnley.

Maguire believes a new owner would be a ‘positive’ for West Brom, but expressed concern about the names linked with a takeover.

“West Brom fans must think that they’ve run over a black cat in terms of the amount of bad news that they’ve had under both Jeremy Peace and Guochuan Lai,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

If this assists the club in terms of moving on and we have a good new owner, then that is a positive.

However, some of the people associated with the bid have been connected to other football acquisitions, which have been quite tawdry in the way that they’ve manifested themselves.

“I think the big fear for West Brom fans is it could be out of the frying pan and into the fire, and they will be cautious.

Fortunately, they’ve got very good people amongst the fan base – Action for Albion and the West Brom Independent shareholders who own 12 per cent of the club are doing their level best to hold the club to account.
