Leeds United pull plug on Carlos Corberan deal after approach made - sources

Leeds United have ruled out appointing Carlos Corberan as their next manager following a change of plan, sources have told Football Insider.

The Yorkshire giants approached the West Brom boss as part of their search to replace interim Sam Allardyce, who, it was confirmed on 2 June, will not see his contract renewed after taking charge of the final four games of last season.

However, the Leeds hierarchy, which is under full ownership of the 49ers, are working to appoint a manager who is out of contract and has experience of the Premier League.

That rules out Corberan, 40, who recently signed a new West Brom deal and has yet to manage in the Premier League.

The Spaniard previously worked as a coach at Leeds alongside Marcelo Bielsa following an impressive stint with the Whites’ Under-23 side.

Football Insider revealed on 3 June that West Brom were aware of interest from Leeds in Corberan.

His long-term future at The Hawthorns has been thrown into doubt amid a backdrop of financial issues at the club.

Corberan knocked back advances from Leeds following the sacking of Jesse Marsch earlier this year, instead deciding to sign a new and improved West Brom deal running until 2027.

He only took charge of the Baggies in October 2022, and won 16 of a possible 30 league games to steer the Midlands side to an eighth-place finish.

The Whites finished 19th in the Premier League and were ultimately relegated to the Championship for the 2023-24 season.

Leeds are on course to be under new ownership after the 49ers Enterprises agreed a full takeover of the Championship club 10 days ago.

In buying out Andrea Radrizzani, the United States-based 49ers will up their holding in Leeds from 44 per cent to 100 per cent control.
