Sources: West Brom reach agreement over Mowatt signing as medical booked

West Brom have agreed to sign Alex Mowatt from Barnsley, Football Insider has learned.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been booked in for a medical with the Midlands outfit after they won the race for his signature.

A West Brom source has told Football Insider that Mowatt is set to complete the move in the next 24 hours.

The ex-Leeds star ran down his contract at Barnsley this month to leave as a free agent.

He joins Valérien Ismael in quitting Barnsley for West Brom this summer.

The 45-year-old was appointed as the new Baggies boss earlier this month and is set to make Mowatt his first signing.

Mowatt captained Ismael’s Barnsley side that reached the Championship play-off semi-finals last term.

They were beaten by Swansea City over two legs but the Tykes’ performances were enough for West Brom to swoop for Ismael.

Mowatt scored eight times and provided seven assists as he missed just two league games last term.

He spent four years at Oakwell and made 162 appearances across all competitions.

West Brom are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements after suffering relegation from the Premier League.

They ended the campaign with a trio of loanees – Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Conor Gallagher and Okay Yokuslu – in the middle of the park.

All three returned to their parent clubs when the season ended.

The Albion are eyeing an instant return to the top-flight after suffering relegation under Sam Allardyce.

In other news, Sunderland have agreed to sign a player who has just quit the Hawthorns.
