Campbell excited by Nixon update on West Brom swoop for Mowatt

Kevin Campbell has claimed Alex Mowatt would be a “no-brainer” of a signing for West Brom this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Albion and Arsenal striker said the 26-year-old’s experience of playing in the Championship and under Valerien Ismael would make him a “top signing”.

According to The Sun‘s Alan Nixon (26 June), Ismael is a big admirer of his old Barnsley midfield general, Mowatt, and could bring him to The Hawthorns.

The Englishman has just days to run on his contract at Oakwell and could join on a free transfer.

Campbell suggested the centre-midfielder is a priority signing with Okay Yokuslu and Ainsley Maitland-Niles returning to their parent clubs after loan spells.

“Mowatt would be a top signing,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“They need to strengthen in the midfield because Yokuslu and Maitland-Niles were only on loan. They need numbers and experience in there.

“If they can add three or four quality signing who can bring experience and competition to the squad they will be up there next season. I think they will be one of the favourites to go up.

“Mowatt knows the division and Ismael well and on a free, it’s a no-brainer.”

Mowatt contributed eight goals and seven assists in 44 Championship games last season.

He made 162 appearances for Barnsley since joining from Leeds United for a six-figure fee in January 2017.
