Hutton: Rangers star James Tavernier is 'unfairly' treated

James Tavernier doesn’t deserve the harsh criticism he has come under at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton was pleased to see Tavernier once again stepping up in “big moments” against St Mirren.

Rangers were comfortable winners at the SMiSA Stadium with a 3-0 victory on Sunday (8 October), despite going into the game three points behind the Saints.

A loss would have seen the managerless Gers drop six points behind St Mirren going into the international break which would have been a double blow after their uninspiring Europa League defeat to Aris Limassol just days before.

When asked if the victory of the Saints will give the squad a big boost moving into the international break and upcoming fixtures.

You hope so,” he told Football Insider.

St Mirren at the end of the day were above them in the league. I think after the Limassol performance, which was a tough watch, you were thinking if St Mirren could keep them quiet you never know what could happen.

But Rangers stuck with it, some decent goals, I thought Tavernier did well. I think he gets a lot of stick that can sometimes be unfair. I think in big moments he always turns up and he proved that once again.

There is a little bit of pressure lifted now and it was good to see the players come together after a disappointing result, it was good for Steven Davis as well.

It is important now that they build on this and the key is getting the right manager in and getting him up to speed.

In other news, big update on Rangers potentially appointing Lampard after talks.
