Sources: Man City close in on Nunes deal after new Wolves talks

Man City are closing in on the signing of Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes as the transfer deadline approaches, sources have told Football Insider.

The treble-winners are now expected to add the 24-year-old to their ranks before Friday’s (1 September) deadline.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (25 August) that City are ready to return with a bid of almost £60million after seeing their opening offer rejected.

It is believed that fee, which would be a club-record departure for Wolves, meets the Molineux club’s valuation of the midfielder.

Nunes has reportedly stopped training for the Midlands club in a bid to push through a move.

The Telegraph claim (28 August) he has told Wolves of his desire to join Man City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have moved into the market for a new midfielder after Kevin de Bruyne’s latest injury setback – with the Belgian set to be out for around four months.

City have already signed Mateo Kovacic this summer following Ilkay Gundogan’s free transfer switch to Barcelona.

Nunes only signed for Wolves for a reported club-record fee of £42.2million last summer and enjoyed a successful debut season in England.

He turned out 39 times for the Midlands club across all competitions, notching one goal and one assist.

The Portugal international started the first two games of the new season but was absent for Saturday’s (26 August) win over Everton through suspension.

Nunes is expected to miss Wolves’ League Cup clash with Blackpool on Tuesday (29 August) after the latest development in City’s interest.
