Sources: Bournemouth chief Richard Hughes to leave the club

Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes is set to leave his role at the club before the end of the year, sources have told Football Insider.

Hughes, 44, has been the Cherries’ football and recruitment chief since 2014 following his retirement as a player the same year.

The Scotsman is highly regarded within recruitment circles and was considered vital in Bournemouth winning promotion to the Premier League twice in 2015 and 2022.

Hughes was responsible for bringing the likes of Nathan Ake, Callum Wilson and Tyrone Mings to the southcoast club who were sold for £41million, £20million, and £25million respectively.

He also headed up a busy window this summer for the Cherries after they remained in the Premier League, signing the likes of Justin Kluivert from AS Roma, Tyler Adams from Leeds United and Max Aarons from Norwich City.

He also recruited 25-year-old defender Lloyd Kelly in 2019, who as revaled by Football Insider (6 November) is on the radar of Liverpool for a January deal.

The Cherries appointed Andoni Iraola this summer after the controversial dismissal of Gary O’Neil, who was appointed Wolves manager on the eve of the new season following the abrupt resignation of Julen Lopetegui.

After surviving relegation by five points last seaosn, Iraola’s side currently sit 18th with just one win and six points.

Hughes amassed 185 appearances for Bournemouth across two spells as a player in the second and third divisions.
