Pundit excited by update on Tottenham swoop for Traore after source's £18m reveal

Wolves’ Adama Traore could be a “great squad player” for Tottenham, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland and Birmingham boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he “loves to watch” the 25-year-old winger.

As per the Athletic (6 January), Tottenham are considering a fresh swoop for Traore in the winter window after failing with a bid earlier this season.

The report claims Matt Doherty could return to Molineux as part of a potential deal – with Spurs boss Antonio Conte planning to convert Traore into a wing-back.

A Wolves source has told Football Insider on Wednesday (5 January) the winger may be available for just £18million after being valued at £50m in August.

McLeish suggested the Spain international has regressed after a couple of seasons where he was “on fire” at Wolves.

Nevertheless, he insisted Traore is a player who “excites the fans”.

“If Conte is interested in him then it’s because of his last three or four years,” McLeish told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“At the start of his career everyone was saying he didn’t have much end product but now we’re starting to see that in his game.

“Let’s be a little bit fair to him, he had a couple of really good seasons where he was on fire for Wolves.

“Yes, he has seemed to regress a wee bit in terms of his consistency, but I must say – when he comes on the pitch, I still love to watch him.

“By goodness, he excites those fans. He’d be a great player for that Tottenham squad, maybe not a starter.”

Traore has made 20 appearances for Wolves this term.

Of those, 10 have come as starts in the Premier League.
