Sources: Aston Villa agree terms with Young as Smith replaces star ruled out for a year

Ashley Young has agreed personal terms with Aston Villa as he finalises a free transfer from Inter Milan, Football Insider understands.

The former Manchester United and England star will re-sign for his old club as he returns to his homeland.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Young has accepted Villa’s offer of a one-year contract with a 12-month option after a breakthrough in talks.

Dean Smith has sanctioned a move for the experienced campaign as he looks to replace Trezeguet.

The 26-year-old suffered knee ligament damage at the end of April and, as revealed by this site, Villa expect him to be out for a year.

Young can slot in on the left wing as well as at left-back and in a left wing-back role.

He was used mainly at wing-back at Inter last season as they won the Serie A title.

However, his contract with the Italian heavyweights is set to expire at the end of the month.

He is now set to return to the club where he made 190 appearances between 2007 and 2011.

Young joined Villa from Watford and scored 37 goals and contributed 59 assists before signing for Manchester United.

He turned out 261 times during his spell at Old Trafford and won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

Young left England for Italy back in January 2020 and played 59 times for Inter.

The 39-cap England international started 16 times in 26 appearances on the way to the Serie A title.
