Revealed: Man City to cash in as £4.2bn windfall on the cards
Man City could earn as much as £150million from a single Champions League campaign in the near future, Football Insider analysis shows.
The Champions League will add four more teams from 2024-25 under a new ‘Swiss Model’ format, which will see each participating club play a minimum of eight games compared to the current six.
Uefa has announced that they are projecting a 33 per cent rise in broadcast and commercial income thanks to the changes, with the bulk of that money to be redistributed among clubs.
The governing body claims that would generate annual revenues of between £4bn and £4.2bn.
The exact mechanism by which the cash will be dished out is under review, with many smaller clubs as well as industry experts lobbying for a more even distribution system.
Many argue that the current model – under which £531m is delegated on the basis of a club’s performance in European competition over the last decade – favours the continent’s established elite.
City, for example, are 8th in Uefa’s 10-year coefficient ranking, which earned them a coefficient payment of around £25m in 2021-22, according to the governing body’s official data.
Meanwhile, FC Sheriff, the lowest-ranked team in the 2021-22 Champions League, earned barely £1m from the same pot.
City banked £94.5m from their run to the semi-final stage last year, where they were knocked out by Real Madrid, their opponents in the semi-final again this season.
Pep Guardiola’s side – who came from a goal behind to draw 1-1 in the first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday (9 May) – will add £17.5m to last season’s figure if they go on to lift the trophy.
With prize money of £112m available to City under the current distribution system, a 33 per cent increase could see them trouser as much as £150m under the expanded competition format from 2024-25.
City host Real in the second leg next Wednesday (17 May) hoping to reach only the second Champions League final in their history.
The final at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium on 10 June could see City cap a historic treble, with the club leading the way in the Premier League and into the final of the FA Cup.
A European triumph would also see them climb a number of places in the 10-year coefficient, thereby increasing the money they could win in next year’s competition.
City recorded the highest revenues in world football in 2021-22, turning a £42m profit on earnings of £613m.
