Liverpool lead the way as £5.1bn development confirmed

Revealed: Record-breaking Liverpool development as £5.1bn news confirmed

Liverpool had the largest revenue increase in the Premier League last season besides the outliers that were promoted from the Championship, Football Insider analysis shows.

The Merseysiders announced club-record turnover of £594million for the 2021-22 campaign, a £107m increase on the previous campaign.

The dramatic upswing was largely due to the return of matchday income following the end of lockdown restrictions, with Liverpool earning £86m through the turnstiles compared to just £3m in 2020-21.

Their run to the Champions League final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in Paris, was also a major contributing factor.

Their European exploits alone were worth £106m, compared to £78m as they reached the quarter-finals in 2020-21.

Research conducted exclusively for this site by chartered accountant and football finance analyst Vivaswan Mukherjee shows that Premier League clubs’ revenues increased by an average of £26.5m in 2021-22.

That amounted to a total increase of £530m across the division, a positive 12 per cent swing on the previous term.

Overall, Premier League clubs earn £5.1billion as they emerged from the pandemic.

Liverpool’s turnover increase was bettered only by Brentford, whose revenue soared from £15m to £140m between the two campaigns.

Significantly, however, the Bees were the only team that had been promoted to the top flight who had not also been in receipt of parachute payments the previous season.

Meanwhile, wages increase from £3.3bn to £3.47bn, with Liverpool accounting for £52m of that growth.
