Sources: Tottenham race Brentford to sign Johan Bakayoko

Tottenham are preparing to go head to head with Brentford for the signature of PSV Eindhoven star Johan Bakayoko in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Thomas Frank’s side are long-term admirers of the winger, 20, and have revived their interest after attempting to lure him to west London in the summer window.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are eager to add forward options in the new year – and as Football Insider revealed on 25 November, Ange Postecoglou’s side are ready to accelerate a move for an attacking signing.

It is believed that Spurs have Bakayoko on their shortlist of winger targets which also includes Juventus and England Under-21 star Samuel Iling-Junior.

Bakayoko, 20, is in huge demand across Europe and is considered one of the most promising youngsters on the continent.

The Belgian speed machine has blown defences away with his quick feet since making his breakthrough in the 2021-22 campaign.

Spurs have struggled with injuries to the likes of Richarlison and Manor Solomon, which has left them thin in attack and has motivated them to sign reinforcements for Postecoglou in January.

Bakayoko opted to stay at PSV this summer and has since featured in every game in all competitions this season for the Eredivisie leaders – who have also qualified for the Champions League knockout stage.

This season he has notched four goals and 12 assists in all competitions and has accrued the joint-most assists in the Dutch top flight with seven.

Bakayoko, who is out of contract in June 2027, joined PSV’s academy in 2019 and has bagged 11 goals and 17 assists in 60 appearances for the senior side.

He made his senior debut for Belgium earlier this year in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden and has since made nine appearances.

Brentford sit 11th in the Premier League following back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool, while Tottenham have slipped from first to fifth after three consecutive losses.
