Ex-Premier League referee can't believe Erling Haaland blunder as 'reckless' Man City footage analysed
Keith Hackett has insisted Man City should have been awarded a “nailed-on” penalty after Erling Haaland’s clash with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the 3-0 win on Saturday (14 May).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Pickford should have been yellow-carded for his “reckless” challenge on the 22-year-old striker.
As seen in footage posted to YouTube by Sky Sports (14 May), Haaland appeared to be struck from behind by Pickford as he shielded the ball inside the Everton penalty area.
Referee Anthony Taylor waved away appeals for a spot-kick and a VAR review by official Craig Pawson found no clear and obvious error in the decision.
Haaland had scored earlier in the game, with a brace from Ilkay Gundogan securing a 3-0 victory for Man City as their relentless pursuit of the Premier League title continues.
City can now clinch a third consecutive title with a victory over Chelsea on Sunday (21 May).
When asked if Pep Guardiola’s side should have been awarded a penalty, Hackett told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I do.
“I think Pickford should have had a yellow card, as well.
“Pickford knows exactly what he was doing. Haaland helped him by slowing down, but the challenge was reckless.
“For me, it looked a nailed-on penalty kick.”
Man City have been awarded the most penalties of any top-flight side this season (10).
Meanwhile, Man United have received the fewest spot-kicks (two).
