Ex-Fifa official: Hyeon-gyu Oh should get extended ban as new Celtic controversy analysed
Keith Hackett has insisted Celtic star Hyeon-gyu Oh should have been red-carded for his “dangerous” high challenge during the 4-1 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday (15 April).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed the 22-year-old “lost control”.
As seen in footage posted to Twitter by Sky Sports (17 April), Oh caught Kilmarnock ace Liam Donnelly after raising his foot high above his head in the middle of the pitch.
The South Korea international, who joined Celtic in the January window, was punished with a yellow card for the challenge.
Speaking post-match and quoted by The Herald (16 April), Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes claimed Oh should have been red-carded after Killie ace Kyle Vassell was dismissed for a similar challenge earlier this season.
If Oh was dismissed, he would have missed the next two fixtures in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic went on to win 4-1 and remain 12 points clear of Rangers atop the table.
Hackett told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “In law, he has endangered the safety of his opponent.
“That’s the reality. He has to be red-carded.
“He is going for the ball but he has to be more aware of the players surrounding him and make sure he’s not losing control of his foot.
“He’s lost control here and should have walked.”
Oh has notched three goals in 13 appearances for Celtic since joining the club four months ago.
He has made just one start across all competitions as he struggles to surpass top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi in the lineup.
