Allan Saint-Maximin 'finished' at Newcastle United after development - pundit

Allan Saint-Maximin’s Newcastle United career is over after failing to make an impact in recent weeks.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the winger’s form.

Saint-Maximin is under contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2026 after signing a long-term deal under Steve Bruce in October 2020.

He made his first start since August as Newcastle drew 1-1 with West Ham last weekend (4 February).

He was hauled off with 20 minutes to go and was replaced by debutant Anthony Gordon.

McManus claims the 21-year-old eclipsed Saint-Maximin’s contribution within minutes of coming on.

“That was Saint-Maximin’s big chance to make an impact and he didn’t take it,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“He’s had his injury problems this season and coming off the bench in the last few games he looked really bright. But that was just 20-minute flashes.

“You put him in from the start against West Ham and he did nothing. He tried to get forward then wouldn’t track back and the one thing you have to do in an Eddie Howe team is graft, work hard.

He didn’t do that then Gordon came on and had a better game after about three minutes. He played a killer ball through to Wilson, more than Saint-Maximin did.

“If he’s not going to work hard then he’s finished at Newcastle, and that would be a big shame.”

Saint-Maximin has scored one goal and registered three assists in the league this season.

Last term he scored and assisted five goals in 37 total outings.
