Exclusive: SPL top-3 boss in frame to be new Barnsley manager

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson is under consideration for the vacant manager’s job at Barnsley, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club are searching for a new manager following the departure of Daniel Stendel today.

A Barnsley source has told Football Insider that Motherwell chief Robinson is among the contenders for the vacancy at Oakwell after impressing north of the border with Motherwell.

Robinson, who has guided the club to third spot in the Scottish Premiership this season, is also thought to be on Millwall’s radar as they look for a replacement for Neil Harris.

Barnsley chiefs have been impressed by Robinson’s ability to work on a limited budget and help promote youth players into the first-team.

He has given the most first-team minutes to academy players than any team in the UK this season.

Robinson, who is in his third season in charge of Motherwell, is highly regarded in coaching circles for the impressive job he has done so far at Fir Park.

He has transformed the club’s fortunes after taking over in March 2017.

The 44-year-old guided Motherwell to two cup finals in his first season in charge and they just missed out on a top-six finish last term.

Barnsley have parted company with Stendel following a run of 10 Championship games without a win.

The 45-year-old German took charge at Oakwell in June 2018 and led the Tykes to promotion from League One in his first season in English football.
