Rangers in advanced talks to hire 36-yr-old after he makes up his mind - Ibrox Sources
Rangers are in advanced talks to appoint Ross Wilson as their new director of football, Football Insider understands.
The Scottish giants are working on a deal for the Southampton head of football operations to take over the role that has been vacant since last month.
Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that discussions with Wilson, 36, have progressed very well and an agreement is now very close.
Wilson has made up his mind to head back north of the border and accept the chance to head up Rangers’ recruitment and work with Steven Gerrard and the Rangers board.
The Scot was a leading target for the director of football role two years ago, but turned down a return to Scotland as he claimed the timing was wrong at the time.
Wilson knows the Scottish game very well after starting out at Falkirk before moving to English football, where his posts have included Watford and Huddersfield before he joined Southampton.
Rangers have been searching for a director of football since Mark Allen quit the post for “family reasons” last month.
The ex-Manchester City academy chief headed back south of the border soon after the summer transfer window had shut.
He was credited with overseeing a far more ambitious and expensive overhaul of the club’s playing staff during his tenure than anything seen during the previous decade.
This culminated in the blockbuster deadline day signing of Ryan Kent from Liverpool for £6.5million rising to £7.5million.
