Pundit issues 'unexpected' Alejandro Garnacho claim after 'big' Man United update

Paul Robinson has backed Man United to tie winger Alejandro Garnacho down to a new contract at Old Trafford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed the 18-year-old has “a big future ahead of him” after an “unexpected” breakthrough this season.

Garnacho has been given regular game time by Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag since the World Cup.

He has contributed one goal and two assists in his nine Premier League appearances, including a match-winning cross for Marcus Rashford in the Manchester derby.

According to The Sun (21 January), United want to tie Garnacho down to an eight-year deal.

However, the player is said to have reservations about putting pen to paper on a contract of such length.

When asked by Football Insider if the Red Devils were making the right move trying to tie down Garnacho to such a deal, Robinson said: “Yes, I’ve been really impressed with him.

“He plays with such confidence. I think he has a big future ahead of him.

“I do not think we expected him to have this much of a role this season. He is coming on and impacting games and starting games we did not expected him to.

“I am not surprised Man United want to tie him down to a new deal. He is one of the best player to come out of their youth setup over the past few years.”
