Pundit issues 'big' Man City verdict after Rico Lewis latest - 'wow'

Paul Robinson has claimed Man City defender Rico Lewis has “a big future ahead of him”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the fact the 18-year-old has been selected ahead of the experience Kyle Walker “speaks volumes.”

Lewis, a product of City’s academy, made his first-team debut in a 5-0 win over FC Copenhagen in October.

He has made 12 further appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, recently starting ahead of Kyle Walker in games against Tottenham and Wolves.

Sources told Football Insider on 7 January that the club are ready to offer Lewis a huge pay rise to secure his long-term future.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the teenage defender, Robinson said: “I’ve been really impressed by him.

“To think he is still only 18-years-old, wow. It is clear that he is a player with a big future ahead of him.

“He was given his opportunity in the cup this year and he took it with both hands. He has given Guardiola a headache.

“The fact that he started ahead of Walker at the weekend speaks volumes. He is quick, can get forward and has shown his defensive capabilities. He gives the manager another option.

“I do not know how fit Walker was at the weekend because he was an unused substitute. For Rico Lewis to be keeping a fully-fit Walker out of the side would be very impressive.

“It is looking like a breakthrough season for the young man.”
