Sources: Swansea and Cardiff plot January moves for Brighton sensation Marc Leonard
Cardiff and Swansea are plotting January moves for Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard amid his impressive form on loan at Northampton, sources have told Football Insider.
The 21-year-old has caught the attention of the Championship clubs after his standout performances at the League One Cobblers this season.
It is believed that the Welsh pair share interest with several admirers from European sides for Leonard, who is highly regarded at Brighton having signed a contract extension last summer.
He helped Northampton win promotion from League Two on loan last season and has since picked up seven Man Of The Match awards in 21 appearances, but could make the jump to the Championship.
The central midfielder has notched one goal this season – the opener in a 2-0 win against Burton Albion earlier this month (11 November).
Northampton are comfortably midtable in the third tier sitting 13th the season after promotion.
Leonard has played predominantly in central midfield this season but has dropped deeper into defensive midfield and has even veered into attack at right-wing.
The Glasgow-born youngster began his youth career at Rangers and move to Hearts before finally settling with the Seagulls in 2018.
He has featured regularly for Scotland’s youth sides from and made his last appearance for the under-21s in a Euro qualifier against Denmark in 2022.
Brighton have a swathe of young talent out on loan, with Leonard one of 11 players aged 25 or under gaining experience away from the Amex in the EFL or Europe.
Swansea sit 18th in the Championship with just one win in their last five while Cardiff sit just three points outside the playoffs.
