Sources: Kalvin Phillips tops three-man Newcastle United signing list

Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips remains the top target at Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed last month (29 October) that Phillips, 27, could join the Magpies on loan in the new year.

Newcastle are keen to bolster their midfield after summer signing Sandro Tonali received a 10-month ban from football after pleading guilty to illegal betting.

Sources have also told Football Insider (7 November) that the Magpies could use their Saudi Arabian links to secure one of the Pro League’s top midfielders temporarily in January.

It is believed Al-Hilal star Ruben Neves is a target, with Newcastle previously keen on signing him when he was at Wolves.

He joined the Saudi giants in the summer for a reported £47million and has notched two goals and one assist in 16 games for his new club so far this season.

Meanwhile, Gabri Veiga could also emerge as a target for Newcastle despite him only leaving Celta Vigo for Al-Ahli in the most recent summer window.

The Saudi club activated his £34.7million release clause and he has gone on to notch one goal and two assists in 11 games for his new club.

It is believed Phillips remains the priority target for Newcastle as they look to beef up their midfield options, but they are ready to explore options in the Saudi Pro League if required.

The England international has made just seven appearances totalling 186 minutes of action for the treble-winners so far this season.

His contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to run until 2028 following his reported £45million arrival from Leeds in 2022.
