Kieran Maguire: Newcastle could now match 'absolutely amazing' Tottenham stadium blueprint
Kieran Maguire has insisted it would be “beneficial” for Newcastle United to follow Tottenham’s “absolutely amazing” stadium blueprint as they gear up plans to redevelop St James’ Park.
The finance expert, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs have more than tripled their matchday revenue – and suggested the Magpies could help stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play if they do the same.
As per the I (1 November), Newcastle have consulted leading architects Populous as they move ahead with plans to redevelop St James’ Park.
Populous were behind the design of Tottenham’s £1.2billion, 62,850-seater stadium, which opened in 2019.
It is claimed they are keen to increase the capacity of the current 52,305-seater ground to beyond 60,000 – with every game in the 2023-24 season so far selling out.
Like the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, St James’ Park is one of the stadiums selected to host games in the Euro 2028 tournament.
Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher: “Tottenham have been absolutely amazing. It’s by far the best stadium in the country.
“Anybody who has attended there will know that it is geared for you to stay there longer, and get you to part with your money.
“They make an estimated £800,000 a match through catering alone.
“It would be beneficial for Newcastle to try and replicate that.
“Whether they’ll be prepared to go down the same route as Tottenham by knocking it all down and building a 21st-century stadium, or whether they’ll add blocks to the stadium – I don’t know.
“It’s clear that demand far outstrips supply with the current football being played by Eddie Howe’s team.
“But in a current FFP environment, Spurs have gone from generating £35million in matchday revenue to potentially generating as much as £120million in a Champions League year.
“That’s essential to complying with the cost control measures coming from UEFA and the Premier League.”
