Kieran Maguire: Man City 'extremely confident' of defending 100+ charges after point deduction twist

Senior sources have revealed Man City remain “extremely confident” of defending more than 100 outstanding Premier League charges – even as Everton are threatened with a points deduction.

That is according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider to claim the controversy surrounding the two clubs is “significantly different”.

In February, Man City were charged with more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

The case was referred to an independent commission but no further information has been released.

Since then, the Premier League has recommended a 12-point deduction as a punishment if Everton are found guilty of breaching regulations.

The Toffees face allegations of breaching Financial Fair Play rules after recording losses of £371.8million in the past three years.

On the pitch, Man City remained undeterred by the February bombshell and went on to win a historic treble in the 2022-23 campaign.

Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher: “I have been personally told from what I can only describe as senior sources, Man City are extremely confident of successfully defending the charges.

“I think the 12-point deduction talk is just an opening gambit when it comes to Everton.

“The nature of the charges levelled at City are so significantly different to Everton’s charges that I don’t think it will be setting a precedent if they are deducted points.

“There’s an awful lot of paperwork to go through and an awful lot of evidence to be presented on both sides. It will take a long time.

“The complete radio silence on City’s case is an indication of the seriousness of the protection that the lawyers are giving this case.”

In other news, Man City plan to let 28-year-old leave.
