Joe Gomez and Liverpool teammate to be binned this summer after what pundit just saw
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will be sold this summer as Jurgen Klopp “can’t rely” on them to cover for first-choice pair Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted both players are “not good enough” for the Reds moving forward.
Gomez, 25, and Matip, 31, started together at centre-back for Liverpool for the first time since November 2021 and endured a torrid time as the Reds fell 3-0 away at Wolves on Saturday (4 February).
Sources told Football Insider on 5 February that the Merseysiders are willing to listen to offers for Matip in the summer.
Nat Phillips is also expected to be sold by Liverpool following his limited involvement this season.
Gomez signed a new five-year contract last summer (2022) but has been the subject of criticism following a number of high-profile mistakes – including in the Premier League fixture against Leeds and the Champions League meeting with Napoli this season.
Liverpool sit 10th in the Premier League – 11 points outside the top four.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think either of them are good enough.
“Gomez has been poor for a long, long time now.
“Matip has some good games but can be really bad in others.
“Konate and Van Dijk are clearly the strongest pair but they have a lot of injury problems between them.
“That will be a worry for Jurgen Klopp. They can’t rely on Matip and Gomez to cover.
“I don’t see anything but them being sold in the summer window.”
