Sources: Liverpool ready to sell Joel Matip and another star defender as total overhaul begins

Liverpool will listen to offers for Joel Matip in the summer as the countdown to the end of his career at the club begins, sources have told Football Insider.

The 31-year-old has slipped to fourth choice centre-back at Anfield this season but has still been a regular starter due to the injuries suffered by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, there has been a clear decline in his performances at a time when so many of Liverpool’s players are struggling.

It is believed that Liverpool are planning to let Matip as well as fellow centre-back Nat Phillips go this summer and they will be made available to suitors.

That will mean the Merseysiders are in the market for at least one senior centre-back as they prepare for what could be a substantial summer overhaul.

Matip has a contract that runs until the summer of 2024 and has been an immensely popular figure at Anfield since joining on a free transfer in 2016 from Schalke.

He has won all the major trophies at Liverpool and is a cult figure in the stands for his unique as well as effective playing style.

But there has been a noticeable decline this season and that was evident once again on Saturday as Liverpool slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Wolves.

The visitors dominated for much of the match, particularly in the second half, but struggled to deal with crosses and counter-attacks as their horror run continues.
