Pundit 'surprised' by Pep Guardiola latest at Man City - 'when I heard that...'

Paul Robinson has claimed Man City manager Pep Guardiola is on the defensive after back-to-back losses.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one was “surprised” and “frustrated” by the way the 52-year-old dismissed the Premier League and League Cup.

Man City lost 2-1 to Man United on Saturday (14 January), three days after being knocked out of the League Cup by Southampton.

Speaking to BT Sport post-match (14 January), Guardiola said he “doesn’t care” about the Premier League and League Cup.

The Premier League holders are eight points behind league leaders Arsenal after 18 games.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts and reaction to the post-match comments made by the City boss, Robinson said: “I was surprised when I heard him say that.

“I think it is a bit of a defensive mechanism. They are a decent amount of points adrift now and I think those comments were an attempt to take some of the pressure of his players.

“Look, the focus for Man City is always going to be the Champions League. That is the one they want. It has alluded them so far. We know that is the trophy Pep Guardiola was brought in to win.

“I think there will be a different attitude towards the Premier League if the gap widens. The way Guardiola has dismissed the last two losses is frustrating.”
