Tottenham controversy 'could be escalated tenfold' after source's reveal - expert

Paul Robinson has claimed the scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the loss to Arsenal were “completely unacceptable.”

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-White Hart Lane number one called for more security behind goals and fears the situation “could have escalated tenfold.”

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was kicked by a Spurs fan in the immediate aftermath of the north London derby.

The club released a statement shortly after the game and vowed to take the “strongest possible action, including an immediate ban from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

Sources have told Football Insider (16 January) that Spurs are likely to issue a lifetime ban to the supporter in question.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, Robinson said: “There is no place for that in football.

“The fan should not be in a position where he can get to Ramsdale. I understand why the fans are frustrated but that is not the way to vent it. It is not acceptable to treat players like that.

“It is something that has worried me for a long time. Fans should not have that access to the pitch. The situation could have been a lot worse. I worry for goalkeepers’ safety given how close they are to the fans. I have no affinity to Arsenal but from a human point of view it is awful.

“It was completely unacceptable. It could have been escalated tenfold. The situation that evolved there could have happened at any other ground in the country.

“Fans have too much access to players. We saw that with the pitch invasions last season. Something needs to be done about it. There should be increased security behind the goals regardless of who is playing.

“Ramsdale should have been better protected.”
