Newcastle United could seal two forward signings after source's Memphis Depay reveal - pundit

Paul Robinson has claimed Newcastle United could sign a striker if Chris Wood is allowed to leave the club this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one also expects a left-winger to arrive before the transfer deadline.

The Magpies are yet to add to their squad in the January transfer window.

Sources have told Football Insider (16 January) that the club have opened preliminary talks over a deal for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay.

Robinson heaped praise on the Tyneside club for their business in the last two windows.

“[Alexander] Isak is back to fitness now,” he told Football Insider. “He will be key between now and the end of the season.

“[Callum] Wilson is looking sharp again and they also have Chris Wood. Howe is never going to play two strikers. The system he likes is one striker with a winger either side.

“There has been talk of Chris Wood going. If he was to go I think they would go into the market for another striker because you cannot rely on Wilson and Isak being fit. Wood has to stay or another striker has to come in.

“Other than that it is the left wing position. I think they will do business if the right player is available for the right price. They will not be held over a barrel. They have shown that.

“The business they have done so far under the new owners has been very clever.”
