Tottenham expert 'surprised' by Antonio Conte as Ryan Sessegnon lambasted
Paul Robinson is “surprised” Ryan Sessegnon started ahead of Ivan Perisic for Tottenham in the north London derby.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Sessegnon, 22, does not have the defensive capabilities of Perisic, 33.
Antonio Conte selected Sessegnon at left wing-back on Sunday (15 January).
The Englishman struggled up against Bukayo Saka and the Gunners went on to win 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
As reported by Sport Bible (15 January), many fans slammed Sessegnon after his performance in the derby.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the decision not to start Perisic in Sunday’s Premier League fixture, Robinson said: “I was surprised so I understand why Spurs fans are questioning it.
“From the manager’s point of view, perhaps he was thinking Sessegnon is faster than Perisic so will be a better match for Saka. However, Sessegnon does not have the defensive capabilities of Perisic. Both players are better going forward in truth.
“Spurs are lacking at left and right wing-back. They are areas the manager is looking at in the transfer window.
“Saka had the run on Sessegnon numerous times. He had a field day. It was a real problem throughout the game and of course that’s why the first goal came from.
“Sessegnon has the athleticism but not the defensive ability to stop him. He struggled, especially in that first half.”
