Pundit issues 'huge' Liverpool transfer claim after journalist's £177m reveal

Paul Robinson has slammed Liverpool for recruiting forwards rather than midfielders in recent transfer windows.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one said the club have made “a huge oversight” by not bolstering their midfield.

Figures from transfermarkt‘s Stefan Bienkowski (14 January) show the Reds have spent more than £177million on forwards over the past three seasons.

In that same period, the club are said to have spent just £19.5million on midfielders.

Thiago Alcantara is the only midfielder to arrive at Anfield since 2020.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Liverpool’s spending in recent years, Robinson said: “You have to question where the money has been spent.

“You wonder who is the one signing the players. Is Jurgen Klopp totally responsible for the recruitment? Or is there people behind the scenes making the decisions?

“It is a huge oversight either way. Everyone accepts that Liverpool’s midfield is not good enough. They are lacking in that department.

“If journalists, ex-players and fans can see that why can’t the recruitment team at Liverpool? You wonder where the breakdown is.

“When you look at the players they have signed, there has been a clear focus on forwards. They do not really need more forwards though. They need midfielders.

“The reason the defence is being exposed is because there is not the protection in front of them anymore.”
