Pundit fears for Aston Villa star Lucas Digne after Sky transfer update - 'he's a victim'

Paul Robinson has claimed Lucas Digne may lose his place in the Aston Villa side to Real Betis left-back Alex Moreno.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Digne, 29, is simply “a victim of circumstance” under new manager Unai Emery.

According to Sky Sports (10 January), Moreno will have a medical at Villa on Wednesday after a £12million deal was agreed with Real Betis.

It comes after Football Insider revealed (8 January) that the Midlands club were closing in on the Spanish full-back, as well as looking to sign a forward player this month.

Digne is under contract at Villa Park until June 2026.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “I am not surprised.

“Unai Emery has come in and he wants to put his own ideas on the table. I have been victim of that in the past. No matter how well you are playing, if the manager has other ideas you can lose your place in the side.

“Lucas Digne may well be in that situation. He is a top player but perhaps Emery wants a left-back who offers something different. Emery will want his own players and his own personnel. Digne is just a victim of circumstance.

“Things had to change at Villa and Emery has to be trusted to deliver that change. If that means a new left-back coming in, so be it.”
