Man United contract clause revealed after £90m+ deal agreed - sources
The deal between Man United and Adidas contains a Champions League contract clause, Football Insider understands.
The Red Devils signed a deal this month worth £900million to extend their kit manufacturer deal with the German sportswear company.
Both parties agreed on a 10-year extension worth £90million per season – £15million more than their previous deal was worth.
The value of United’s new Adidas deal is a record-breaking fee for a kit manufacturer deal in the Premier League.
Their previous agreement was worth £75million annually but a clause in the contract meant the fee dropped 30 per cent (£22.5million) if United failed to qualify for the Champions League in successive years.
Football Insider understands that a similar Champions League clause exists in the new £900million deal.
That means the Red Devils would see the value of their Adidas partnership drop £27million if they fail to qualify for the tournament for two seasons.
Adidas replaced Nike as United’s kit manufacturer in the 2015/16 season and moved quickly to extend their partnership with the Manchester club this summer.
United were at risk of seeing their Adidas deal drop in value if they didn’t qualify for the Champions League in 2022/23.
However, Erik ten Hag’s side secured a third-placed finish in the Premier League last season to qualify for the prestigious European tournament and retain the value of the Adidas deal.
United will discover their group-stage opponents when the Champions League draw takes place on 31 August.
