Sources: Liverpool set to 'lose millions' after shattering development

Liverpool have already lost £820,000 in matchday revenue and are set to ‘lose millions’ more because of delays to the Anfield expansion, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds were hopeful that their expansion to the Anfield Road stand would be completed in time for the start of the 2023/24 season.

However, the Merseyside club had to delay the stand’s unveiling and then faced further complications when contractors – Buckingham Group – filed for administration last month.

The stand is expected to cost Liverpool £80million in total, although that figure could grow further because of the latest delays.

Football Insider revealed last Friday (8 September) that Liverpool aren’t expected to open the new stand at full capacity until December.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already played twice at home at reduced capacity, and the club could be set to face a significant hit to matchday revenues as a result.

Viva Mukherjee, a chartered accountant and football finance analyst, told Football Insider the financial impact of Anfield’s reduced capacity.

In the 2021/22 season, Liverpool earned £86million in matchday revenue,” he said.

“That figure was split into £57million from Premier League ticket sales and season tickets, £15million from Champions League fixtures and an extra £14million from domestic cup competitions and additional revenues.

“Following the delay of the Anfield Road expansion, we’ve seen Liverpool run a reduced home capacity, lowering ticket sales by around 3,000 – 4,000.

“The attendance levels were 49,699 at Bournemouth and 50,109 at Aston Villa, and are expected to be the same for the cup tie against Leicester City.

“Overall, lowered capacity has already cost Liverpool £820,000, while also adding on to the growing construction costs of the stand.

“With the stand still set to be delayed until it’s phased opening in October, Liverpool stand to lose millions because of the delays.”
