Man City set to surpass Man United with record-breaking £400m payout
Man City are on track to break the Premier League record for the highest wage bill in 2023/24.
City are set to experience a steep wage rise after winning a historic treble last season.
Pep Guardiola’s 24-man squad are set to receive hefty wage increases and bonuses after winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
Football Insider revealed on 18 May that City’s squad could pocket as much as £35million in bonuses for winning the treble.
City’s wage bill was recorded at £353million in the 2021/22 season, but many first-team players have contract clauses that will trigger a wage increase after winning silverware.
On top of clauses, the signing of Erling Haaland has also inflated City’s wage bill, with the Norwegian striker earning a considerable pay packet at the Etihad since his arrival last summer.
The Daily Mail report that Haaland earns a basic salary of £375,000 per week, but lucrative bonuses see his pay rise to over £850,000 – over £45million per year.
Taking into consideration City’s success in the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup this season, Football Insider calculations expect City’s wage bill to exceed £400million next season.
Player sales this summer will impact City’s wages and could drag the figure below the £400million milestone.
Club captain Ilkay Gundogan has already departed the club while Kyle Walker and Aymeric Laporte could also reportedly leave.
The current Premier League wage record is held by City’s rivals Man United, who recorded a bill of £384million in 2021/22.
The Red Devils lowered their bill through the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, and they are now set to be surpassed by City.
