Revealed: Man City smash record with historic £274m windfall

Man City have earned a record-breaking £274million in prize money in the just-completed season after winning the treble, Football Insider analysis has revealed.

Pep Guardiola’s side rounded off their season with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final to complete a historic treble.

City pipped Arsenal to the league, beat arch-rivals Man United in the FA Cup final and won their first-ever Champions League trophy to become only the second team in England to complete the treble.

The achievement has also pocketed City £274million in prize money – a record-breaking sum for an English football club.

The Premier League is the most lucrative of the three tournaments, with City earning approximately £160million for winning their seventh league title.

A large majority of that fee comes from broadcast payments, with the Premier League splitting TV revenue equally between the 20 sides with each club earning around £85million in 2022/23.

A further £2.2million is paid per position in the table, meaning City earned north of £40million in merit payments for topping the table.

Finally, the Premier League also pays an extra facility fee each time a side is broadcast live on TV, taking the total of their league prize money to around £160million.

City’s Champions League triumph was worth around £110million.

Guardiola’s side earned £13.6million simply for qualifying and added an extra £11.2million to the sum through their results in the group stage.

Progression from the round of 16 to the final is worth around £48million as per official Uefa documents, while extra payments from Uefa’s market pool and their 10-year coefficient standings adds to the overall figure.

Prize money from the FA Cup pales in comparison to the Premier League and Champions League, but City’s domestic cup success was still worth around £4million overall.

Winning the final against United earned City £2million, with the runners-up earning only £1million for their efforts.

Overall, the sum of City’s prize money has seen them earn a staggering £274million in 2022/23.
