Revealed: Leeds United hit by devastating £80m blow

Leeds United are set to lose £80million in television payments alone after being relegated to the Championship, Football Insider can reveal.

The Whites were unable to rescue their top-flight status this season and finished 19th in the table after a 4-1 loss to Tottenham on the final day.

The Yorkshire club are now set to face a devastating financial hit after returning to the Championship following a three-year stay in the Premier League.

Despite finishing in the relegation zone, Leeds earned £87.5million from broadcast payments in the Premier League in 2022/23.

That figure is split into three separate payments, with £31.8million coming from the domestic TV rights in the UK, £48.9million coming from foreign TV deals and £6.8million in commercial payments from the Premier League itself.

On top of that, Leeds will have received facility payments based on how many of their matches were broadcast.

The broadcast money awarded in the EFL is significantly less and will have a major impact on Leeds United’s revenues for the 2023/24 season.

The equal share of domestic and foreign TV rights is only £2.5million in the Championship, while solidarity payments from the Premier League adds an extra £4.5million.

Facility payments are also heavily reduced, with clubs earning anywhere between £10,000 and £100,000 per match broadcast.

This site’s analysis expects Leeds to earn approximately £8million in broadcast payments next season.

Should Leeds stay in the Championship beyond the 2023/24 season, the EFL’s new £935million five-year deal with Sky Sports comes into effect in the 2024/25 campaign.

According to the EFL, the improved rights deal will increase financial distribution by approximately 46 per cent, although it will still pale in comparison to the TV payments available in the Premier League.
