Revealed: Newcastle United land £35m windfall - further £50m on the way
Newcastle United have guaranteed a minimum of £35million by qualifying for the Champions League, Football Insider analysis shows.
The Tyneside club secured their spot in next season’s competition after their goalless draw with Leicester City confirmed a top-four finish.
Eddie Howe’s side are now set to compete in the European competition for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Simply qualifying for the Champions League group stage earns the Magpies a £13.6million participation fee handed out to all 32 teams in the competition.
Newcastle are also set to earn a significant fee from Uefa’s market pool, which is distributed between clubs based on how much their country contributes and how many games they play in the competition.
The figure of Newcastle’s market pool sum will depend on how far they progress in the tournament, but a conservative estimate would guarantee the club an extra £11million.
Where the North East club will suffer compared to their rivals is in Uefa’s coefficient payments where clubs are paid based on their results in Europe over the last 10 years.
As per Uefa’s current coefficient standings, Newcastle rank 97th, with their only appearance in Europe in the last decade coming in the 2012/13 Europa League.
Uefa distributes £531million between clubs based on their coefficient ranking – Newcastle are set to earn around £3million from that pool.
Participation in the Champions League will also benefit Newcastle’s matchday revenue, with St James’ Park set to host a minimum of three European matches in the group stage.
This site’s analysis shows that Newcastle could earn as much as £2.5million per matchday with St James’ Park expected to reach its full 52,000 capacity.
An extra £7.5million revenue in matchday earnings takes Newcastle’s total Champions League earnings to a bare minimum of £35.1million.
Success in the group stage and beyond will boost Newcastle’s winnings further, with Uefa rewarding clubs £2.4million per win and £807,000 per draw in the group stage.
There is an extra £50million in prize money handed out by Uefa in the later rounds of the competition, giving Newcastle the chance to inflate their European earnings further.
