Sources: Portsmouth offer manager's job to John Mousinho

Portsmouth have offered Oxford United player-coach John Mousinho the vacant manager’s job at Fratton Park, sources have told Football Insider.

Mousinho, 36, has impressed Portsmouth’s hierarchy in an interview and they want him to replace Danny Cowley following his sacking earlier this month.

Portsmouth are now trying to agree a deal with Oxford for Mousinho, who still has six months left to run on his deal at the Kassam Stadium.

Mousinho is also chairman of the PFA, a position he will have to resign if he if gives up his playing duties upon his move to Pompey.

Portsmouth are 15th in the third tier and without a win in 11 league matches ahead of their home clash against Exeter City on Saturday (21 January).

Mousinho’s Oxford meanwhile are 13th in League One.

The defender, who took on his player-coach role ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, has scored twice in eight appearances this season, although only four of those outings have come in the league.

His playing career has seen him have permanent spells at Brentford, Wycombe, Stevenage, Preston and Burton.

This site revealed on Tuesday (17 January) that Portsmouth are one of several EFL sides in the race to sign Arsenal academy graduate Robbie Burton.

The 23-year-old midfielder is a free agent after leaving Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb earlier this month.

The south-coast side only addition of the January window so far is 20-year-old defender Ryley Towler, who has joined on a permanent deal from Bristol City.
