West Ham have four brilliant players Moyes can't get the best out of - expert

West Ham United are “better than” David Moyes’ counter-attacking style of play.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers striker Frank McAvennie admitted that the Scotsman is a good fit for the club but the players are capable of more.

Moyes has come under fresh criticism after a slump in form in the Premier League and Europa League with consecutive defeats to Aston Villa, Olympiacos and Everton.

The Hammers did taste victory in the League Cup in a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Wednesday (1 November), but criticism about Moyes’ tactics remains.

McAvennie revealed he is no fan of the counter-attacking football but will hesitate to criticise the manager if West Ham secure wins.

“For me, David is a good fit for the club,” he told Football Insider.

“My personal opinion is that David’s way of playing is counter-attacking. I think that’s alright when you’ve not got good players.

“I don’t think they should be a counter-attacking team, I think they should be on the front foot, but that’s my opinion.

“I think when you’ve got players like Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and even Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio, they’ve got brilliant players in there who can play football, and they’re being wasted.

“I don’t like West Ham being a counter-attacking team because I think we’re better than that.

“We started winning games and then you’re thinking that you can’t say anything.”
