McAvennie reveals who should replace James Tavernier as Rangers captain

Ryan Jack should replace James Tavernier as Rangers captain.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie suggested Jack is the only player within the current Gers squad fit enough to take on the armband.

Current captain Tavernier has come under severe criticism in recent weeks given the poor performances from the side with some members of the fanbase questioning if he is fit enough to wear the armband.

Jack joined the club from Aberdeen back in 2017 and has been an important member of the side since then and although not a regular starter any longer had been heavily utilised by former boss Michael Beale.

The 31-year-old has made 11 appearances so far this season and notched one goal, starting six of those outings.

Former manager Michael Beale brought in several new assets in the centre of the park this summer including Jose Cifuentes, Kieran Dowell with Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin joining in the January window.

Despite his lack of presence in the starting lineup, McAvennie suggested Jack should take over from Tavernier.

I do not know who in that team would be willing to take the captaincy,” he told Football Insider.

Maybe Ryan Jack, not Cantwell but I would give it to Jack. He is about the only one, I would not have [Connor] Goldson but maybe [Jack] Butland, he has been there, seen it and done it.

I would take it away from Tav, he is not getting his message across to the players. Give it to somebody in midfield like Ryan Jack.
