'Car salesman' Michael Beale was never fit to manage Rangers - McAvennie

Michael Beale was never fit to be the manager of Rangers and caused his own downfall.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie said Beale was never destined to be a good manager but claimed that he managed to talk his way into the top job at Ibrox.

The 43-year-old was sacked by the Light Blues after an underwhelming start to his first full season in charge, having already lost three of the opening Premiership games.

The Gers trail Celtic by seven points and missed out on a Champions League spot after an embarrassing 5-1 away defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of their play-off match.

Club legend Steven Davis has taken interim charge of the squad Beale has built and lost his first game, a 2-1 defeat to Aris Limassol in the Europa League.

McAvennie wasn’t surprised that Beale was relieved of his duties and insisted he was never cut out for the top job.

Everything is coming out now,” he told Football Insider.

I said at the time that I could not believe he was coming up, having meetings with the board, sitting in the stands whilst Giovanni van Bronckhorst was still there, that was so disrespectful.

Good coaches do not make good managers. He came up here and he was like a car salesman, he could talk you in to buying anything but bringing in players that can’t score goals is never going to win you an award.”
