Celtic urged to sign goalkeeper in January after Scott Bain latest - expert

Scott Bain is “not good enough” to be the number two goalkeeper at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie is worried about the prospect of having Bain in goals for European games if first choice Joe Hart is not available for selection.

Bain has made two appearances for the Celts this season after Hart was sent off against Livingston last weekend.

James Forrest was withdrawn to make room for Bain to play out the 60 remaining minutes of the game.

The 31-year-old was in the starting lineup against Motherwell on Saturday (30 September) in place of the suspended Hart and started a game for the first time since the 4-2 defeat to Hibernian in May.

Bain’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the current season after signing an extension in January 2022, four years after his arrival from Dundee.

When asked if Brendan Rodgers should be looking to replace Bain in January, McAvennie told Football Insider:I think he has got to do something because it is not good enough.

If we go into Europe with Bain in goals it is not good enough. No disrespect to the keeper but he is not in Joe Hart’s class when it comes to saving things, his decision-making is not the best.

He is a good keeper but he is not a number one for me. I would love for him to prove me wrong.
