'Can Rangers afford him?' - Pundit reacts to raid for 24 goal/assist ace who bullied Celtic
Frank McAvennie has claimed that Rangers would not be able to afford strongly-linked Lyndon Dykes because he will “cost a lot of money” this summer.
The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, also ruled out his former club signing the 24-year-old this summer as he would not want to “play third fiddle” at Parkhead.
The Livingston striker scored 12 goals and added 12 assists in his 33 appearances before the Scottish season was curtailed.
Speculation has surrounded his future and Dykes has backed himself that to succeed at Ibrox if given the opportunity.
When asked by Football Insider if he could see the striker playing for one of the Old Firm clubs next season, McAvennie said:
“Dykes has caused problems for the Rangers and Celtic defence.
“He could have tipped his hat to Scotland and I would have endeared him but he is going to play for Australia which is fine.
“A good player but he will cost a lot of money. I do not know if Rangers could afford him.
“He will not go to Celtic because they have two very good strikers in Edouard and Griffiths. Dykes would not want to go there and play third fiddle because Edouard and Griffiths are not going anywhere.
“It would need to be Rangers and he would be too much money for them.”
Dykes told PLZ Soccer: “I do not see why I could not step into a club like Rangers.
“Obviously they are a massive club but I back myself 100 per cent.”
