'One of the best' - Exclusive: McAvennie drools after Rangers agree new signing

Frank McAvennie is confident Allan McGregor will remain number one at Rangers despite the arrival of Jon McLaughlin at Ibrox last week.

The former Celtic and West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hailed McGregor, 39, one of the Gers “best signings” and insisted his playing career is far from finished.

The club confirmed the capture of Jon McLaughlin, 32, on a free transfer after his contract at Sunderland expired.

He kept 11 clean sheets in 32 appearances for the Black Cats last season and snubbed a new deal at the League One side in favour of a two-year deal at Ibrox.

McAvennie claimed the Scotland international can learn a lot from McGregor despite the vast amount of experience his already possesses.

“McGregor has been one of their best signings,” he told Football Insider.

“He is still a very good keeper and he can go on because he does not have to run around like other players.

“McLaughlin will learn off McGregor because he is one of the best.

“He will get some kind of game time but I am not sure if he will go straight in as the number one.”

McLaughlin told the club’s website: “It’s a very proud moment for myself and for the family.

“Speaking with the manager and his staff, and knowing the vision and the direction they have got, and what they are trying to achieve here, and the opportunity to be a part of that was what sold it to me.”

In other Rangers news, a journalist has waxed lyrical to Football Insider as the club finalise “outstanding” new signing.
